Tour 4. Hybrid, ‘Design City’ Seoul: From Traditional Markets to Design-Driven
Artistic/Commercial Spaces
Following Seoul's Mixed Aesthetic, from an Artist Hub in a Traditional Market Basement to the City's Official Souvenir Shop, this tour begins in one of Seoul’s oldest traditional markets, Jungang Market, home to Seoul Art Space Sindang, an underground arcade turned creative studio complex for emerging artists. From there, the journey leads us to Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), an iconic piece of futuristic architecture at the heart of the city’s design scene.
After a local lunch near Sindang Station, participants will walk through the traditional market, visit the creative studios of young resident artists, and enjoy a short tea break. The tour concludes with a guided visit to the official Seoul Souvenir Shop inside DDP. Within a few hours, participants will witness the coexistence of old vendors and temporary artist residents, and experience the stark contrast between contemporary art/craft practices and highly commercialized design goods—a compact yet compelling artistic urban tour.
